Rising Stars: The Pathway from Junior Talent to Senior Players

Saturday is a crucial night for Moreton City Excelsior’s women who are appealing for extra help in a crunch clash at Wolter Park.

Our FQPL1 women would love to take on Ipswich Knights (kick-off 7pm), lifted by a big crowd creating a 12th MCE player on the pitch.

MCE have 11 points from 15 games, three ahead of SWQ Thunder who are in the second relegation spot. Ipswich are bottom with three points. Victory for MCE would keep them clear of the drop with just two matches remaining. Thunder is at leaders Gold Coast Knights (5pm).

“We would love to see a big crowd come and cheer us on,” said Summer Brownlie.

“I remember going to Wolter Park and watching the first team when I was younger and was always great to be able to see and meet those players. “It pushed me to become a first team player and as we know each other so well in this team, it helps us push each other and be the best we can.”

Since joining the FQPL in 2022, our club has focussed on promoting from within and the current senior squad has an average age of just 19.

There are also10 players who started their footballing journey with Albany Creek Excelsior or Moreton Bay United – which merged last year to form MCE. They are:

Rylee Lemke (who started in ACE Kindy)

Jorja Rolls (ACE Under 9)

Sunny Rutch (MBU Under 10)

Jess Mahon (MBU Under 13)

Brooke Latimer (ACE Under 10)

Charlee Hickey (ACE Under 12)

Alex Armstrong (ACE Under 13)

Kiahn Thompson (MBU Under 13)

Kahli Anderson (MBU Under 13)

Summer Brownlie (ACE Under 12)

Coach Greg Bradley said the experience these girls are getting in senior football, at such a young age, sets us up well for the future. And it would be very hard to find another club that promotes their juniors like MCE.

“It has been a pleasure to be able to see these girls grow and now form the nucleus of our first team,” Greg said.

“While there have been challenges having such a young squad, to see them mature over the past two seasons has been great.

“As a club we should be proud of the journey these girls have taken and support them to the full.”
